A Personable Photography Experience
Goodbye to Flying High Photography, and hello to Jake Suss Photography!
Flying High has been a good name, but the horizons are a little broader for Jake Suss Photography. With the new name of course, comes a new website! Go check out my new website at jakesussphotography.com and check out my full portfolio and all the services I offer!
I’m not the only one done with finals now. The lovely Nicole
is also done with finals, and to celebrate, we thought we would put together
one of her favorite pastimes: Tae Kwon Do, with one of mine: making messes.
So, I waited until it got dark, spread out a tarp (lot of
good that did me), and broke out a 25lbs bag of flour. Did you know they’re
only $10 a Fry’s? My mayhem prepared, I took out my camera and my speedlight and got to work.
First, I exposed the scene without the flash and made sure
that everything in the background was pitch black. Then I put Nicole in the
picture and got a few shots of her to make sure that my lighting was correct.
Even though my camera isn’t a crazy-expensive high-speed camera, I can leave a
long exposure and let the flash’s super-short burst of light freeze the motion
in my image. The results were pretty surprising!
Then came the flour. Beforehand, Nicole and I planned a few
of the shots we wanted to get, a couple different kicks, some chops, something
cool with a sword, but a lot of it was just seeing what looked cool with the
flour. I quickly found that the more flour, the better, and had two assistants
throwing flour in the background even as she was kicking more into the air.
The results were awesome. With flour flying everywhere, it
gave a foggy background to obfuscate everything else in the picture, but still
emphasize her motion and precision. Enjoy!
Sometimes (all the time) I give thanks for my choice not to be an engineering student. For, while my friends are living in the library, I get to spend my time out in the freezing cold, creating beautiful images.
Is this just another picture of Granite Mountain, or something else? Is it the start of a much larger project?
Keep checking back over the next few weeks to find out!
Sometimes the perfect picture is a matter of luck, being at the right place in the right time. But sometimes, careful planning and forethought culminate in the perfect picture.
It seems as though it’s been months since I’ve taken landscape pictures for fun, which is what got me into this hobby to start. School and work add up quickly to preclude me from taking the time to go out and take the pictures I love, but I do get the chance to spend a little time planning my next photo shoot. As finals draw to an end, I finally have time again to go out and take the pictures I’ve been planning.
In the north part of Prescott, where my school lies, Granite Mountain dominates the landscape. Its beautiful, rocky slopes glow pink as the sun rises and a deep blue silhouette as the sun sets. As the first part of a series I’m planning describing Prescott, this picture shows what the end of a day in Prescott looks like.
Enjoy!
I’ve had the pleasure to photograph the Embry Riddle Lady Eagles throughout their 2013 season, where they took 2nd place in the conference! Congratulations!
Near my school is a beautiful lake surrounded by granite dells. The rich oranges and reds in the rock contrast with the blues of the water and provide a perfect photography destination! Last winter, on a cold morning before finals, I woke up early to go and take some pictures of the lake during sunrise. The results were beautiful.
Thanks to Nicole for the wonderful photos! She’s always a pleasure to work with, even if it takes an hour to get her to pose once 🙂
Every year, members of the Detachment 028 AFROTC Honor Corps post a 24 hour vigil outside the Veteran’s Hospital. They rotate in shifts and guard the flag from 1100 on 10 Nov to 1100 on 11 Nov, standing in the cold all through the night in memory of those who have served and those currently serving.
